Winnipeg, MB.- (June 15, 2009) – Many players shone with low scores in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Srixon Series at the South Interlake Golf Club in Winnipeg this past sunny weekend, while competing for division titles as well as a spot on MJT Team Canada to the Kingdom of Fife Matches in St. Andrews, Scotland, UK.
Steve Minion, 17, of Winnipeg, took top honours overall and in the Boys 17-19 division with his slick one-under-par score on the first day and even par the second day. Citing “iron play, hitting great shots,” as keys to his success, Minion carded 70-71 (141) for the weekend and secured his placement on MJT Team Canada to Scotland this August.
Runner-up in this division was Burke Wiebe, 18, also of Winnipeg, who golfed consistently the two days with scores of 73-74 (147), finishing six-shots back of the leader. Third place went to Josh Wytinck, 17, of Glenboro, who rounded out his effort under the fair conditions with a solid 76-74 (150).
A tight race in the Boys 14-16 division saw Winnipeg’s Scott Mazur neck-and-neck with Brodie Gobin, 15, of St. Claude, and Noel Ngo, 14, of Selkirk. Mazur’s goal of playing and finishing well in all of his tournaments held true today for the 16 year-old, who outpaced the others to shoot 77-75 (152) and clinch first place. “I played steady and never made any big mistakes,” he said, adding, “it feels good to win while I’m at the top of my age group.” Gobin led the first day by one stroke, but gave it up to Mazur on day two, netting 76-77 (153) and taking second place in the division. Ngo was close behind them, knocking a couple of strokes off his first day to finish third with 78-76 (154).
