MASON MAKES A POINT

Point Roberts, WA - (October 12, 2009) – After four years of competing in many tournaments on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Keanna Mason shot the low overall score and won her very first Girls division title over the Thanksgiving weekend at Point Roberts Golf and Country Club in Point Roberts, WA.

Mason, 13, of Maple Ridge, fired 74 despite blustery winds on a tough golf course during the Srixon-sponsored event on October 10th, coming out on top of a very good field. “I don’t know what to think of it. I’m mostly shocked right now. I’ve played on this tour since I was 9 and never won,” she said. “It was really my putting, and my driver. I’d like to thank my coach, Brian Jung, and my mom and dad for their dedication.” Runner-up in the Girls division was Anica Yoo, 16, of Port Coquitlam, who finished two strokes back with a 76, edging Valentina Trillo, 15, of Port Moody who had to settle for third place with a 77.

There were playoffs to decide the champions in both the Boys 14-16 and 17-19 divisions. MJT newcomer, Ayrton Mantha, 16, of Penticton, made the trip to the Point worth his while after defeating Vancouver’s Nick Russell, 16, in a playoff after they had tied for first place in Boys 14-16 with a score of 77. “I feel great since this is my first win not at my course,” commented Mantha, who plays out of Penticton Golf Club. Third place in the division was claimed by Austin Hughes, 14, of Tsawwassen, who fired 81.

In the Boys 17-19 division, Vancouver’s Brendan Southwind, 17, also won his first MJT title after beating fellow Vancouverite James Park, 17, in a playoff after they had tied for the lead at 79. “The course was really tough and the wind didn’t make it easier,” said Southwind. “My ball striking and recovery from tough situations were key. It feels good to win. I just need to work on a few parts of my game to shave off the last few strokes.” Charlie Juan, 19, of Richmond, came third in the division with a score of 80.

Jun Kang, 13, of Port Moody, won the Boys 13 and under title with a score of 82, beating runner-up Jaesung Choi, 13, of North Vancouver, by three strokes. “I was trying very hard. And having fun,” said Kang about his victory on a course he rated as having a fantastic view. “I was tying an opponent until the 14th hole, but I decided to play as hard as I could and then parred three straight holes and made a birdie on the last hole.” Matthew Davis, 13, of Tsawwassen, took third spot in the group with a score of 88.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Jaesung Choi, Sean Moen, 16, of North Vancouver, Kyle Pettie, 17, of Coquitlam, and Anica Yoo. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Jun Kang, Brandon Brassart, 16, of Abbotsford, Charlie Juan and Keanna Mason. There were also many draw prize winners in the tournament.

The final stop of the MJT Srixon One Day Series is at University Golf Club in Vancouver on October 17th. For more information, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
