KALIA CLAIMS LOW OVERALL ON MJT AT WHISTLE BEAR

CAMBRIDGE, ON – Howling winds resulted in an overall low score of 79 at the final stop on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Ontario Fall Series, held at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge on Saturday, October 25th. Claimed in the Boys 14-16 division by Sameer Kalia, 14, of Campbellville, this low score won him his first title in just two starts on the MJT.

“Finishing with the low overall score was my highlight,” he said. “It feels great to win a MJT event in my second appearance.” Three players tied for second place just one stroke back of Kalia in this division: Dylan Hamara, 15, of Cambridge, Cody Bergamin, 16, of Toronto, and Dylan Smallwood, 16, of Cambridge.

Chris Riediger, 20, of Kitchener, and Sterling Emery, 17, of Orangeville, both shot 80 to tie for the lead in the Boys 17 and up division. Riediger, who took home the first-place trophy based on retrogression, said, “The golf course was in fantastic shape but very difficult with the wind. It felt good to get a win after making some swing changes and battling through the tough conditions.” Third spot in the division went to Chad Currie, 18, of Owen Sound, who carded 83.

The Girls division was won in fine style by newcomer Samantha Spencer, 12, of Georgetown, who shot 88. “It feels great to play well in such wind and win a tournament on the MJT in my first event,” she said. “This is a great tour that puts fun first.” Second place went to Brittany Davidson, 17, of Mississauga, who carded 94, while Kirsten Degutis, 15, of Waterloo, placed third among the girls with a score of 101.

Matt LeMay, 13, of Waterloo, maintained his perfect record of late and repeated as winner of the Boys 13 and under division after firing 81. “My highlight was playing with Nathan Corrin and Brandon Seys – it was nice to see them again after Bolingbrook,” said LeMay, who competed with both these other players in the World Youth Team Challenge in Bolingbrook, Illinois, earlier this year. “The conditions were difficult but this win was a nice way to wrap up the MJT season.” Tied for second place behind LeMay with a score of 87 were Mark Wodz, 10, of Scarborough, and Joseph Kremer, 13, of North York.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive competition were Mark Wodz, Dylan Smallwood, Sterling Emery and Samantha Spencer, while the Sundog Skills competition winners were Joseph Kremer, Dylan Hamara, Taylor Prilisauer, 17, of Cambridge, and Brittany Davidson.

The MJT season starts up again in spring 2009, and an early-bird registration will be available later this year. The full schedule of over 40 tournaments across Canada will be available in February 2009. For more information please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-GOLF.
