MATHERS CLAIMS LOW OVERALL ON MJT AT MYSTIC

ANCASTER, ON – Tough weather conditions plagued progress at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Ontario Tour Championship held at Mystic Golf Club in Ancaster on August 4th through 6th. Rain delays forced many players to complete their rounds the following day, as they battled for division titles as well as a spot to the Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) National Championship in Florida, USA, in the 54 hole event.

David Mathers, 17, played consistent golf to card solid rounds of 75-74-75 (224), winning the Boys 17 and up division by four strokes and earning the spot to Florida as MJT Ontario Tour Champion with the low overall score. This is Mathers’s sixth year on the MJT and first win this season. Tied for second place at 228 in his division was seven-year MJT veteran, Spencer Buck, 17, of Etobicoke, who shot 76-75-77, and Sterling Emery, 17, of Orangeville (75-76-77).

14-year-old Lucas Kim of Etobicoke took the Boys 14-16 title in style, firing 77-76-73 (226) to win by five strokes. Michael Blair, 16, of Burlington, shot 75-75-81 to tie for second place in the division at 231 total score with Truman Tai, 14, of Markham (75-74-82).

The Boys 13 and under division was won by Matt LeMay, 12, of Waterloo, after he shot 77-85-81 (243) to beat runner-up Nicholas Crozier by four shots. Crozier, 13, of Unionville, posted scores of 76-87-84 (247). Ryan Borg, 13, of Mississauga, placed third in the division with rounds of 83-87-78 (248).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Ryan Borg, Brian Jurkiewicz, 15, of Hamburg, NY, and Chris Riediger, 20, of Kitchener. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Nicholas Crozier and Kevin McDonald, 15, of Delhi.

The tournament at Mystic marks the end of the multi-day event schedule in Ontario for the MJT; a series of one-day tournaments run this fall. In the interim players will be receiving invitations to the MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship at Nicklaus North Golf Club in Whistler, British Columbia, on August 25th and 26th.
