ROBERTS ARIZONA-BOUND AFTER MJT’S MCKENZIE MEADOWS STOP

CALGARY, AB – Junior golfers at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) tournament at McKenzie Meadows Golf Course in Calgary this past Tuesday and Wednesday rated the course in excellent shape, and this fact combined with hot weather led to some good scores despite 30kph to 40kph winds during round two. Players were competing for their respective division titles in the two-day event as well as for a spot in the CAN-USA Team Matches at ASU Karsten Golf Club in Tempe, Arizona, this December.

Calgarians dominated the Boys 17 and up division, where Tyler Roberts, 17, edged out David Durbeniuk by a shot to claim the overall low score and his division, earning the exemption to Arizona. “Coming down the stretch I was just thinking about making par,” said Roberts, after shooting great rounds of 71-72 (143). “A few competitors had me worried at this point as the group was tight at the end and I made a couple of putts to stay alive. Putting and the great conditions of the course were key. It feels great, it’s my first win so it’s a new, cool feeling.” Durbeniuk, 18, shot 70-75 (145). Craig Klassen, 18, closed with an outstanding 68 to vault into third place in the division (78-68=146).

A hard-charging Riley Fleming, 15, of Airdrie, AB, fired a brilliant closing round of 69 to overtake 11 players and win the Boys 14-16 division with scores of 76-69 (145). “My highlight was eagling the 13th (hole) both days!” he said. “This win is just awesome, great!” One stroke back was runner-up Brett Greiner, 16, of Calgary, who shot 72-74 (146), while third place went to Connor O’Reilly, 16, of Edmonton, AB, who carded rounds of 72-75 (147).

Among boys 13 and under, Ian Mmbando, 13, of Lethbridge, continued his excellent play carding 77-76 (153) to win his third MJT division title after hitting greens in regulation and solid lag putting kept him low. Coming down the stretch he said his thoughts were to “make pars, it was windy!” Second spot went to 9-year-old Christopher Ballesteros of Vancouver, BC, who shot solid rounds of 80-84 (164). Third place was claimed by Nick Scrymgeour, 13, of Strathmore, AB, after he shot back-to-back rounds of 84.

In the Girls division, Jamie Oleskiew, 13, of Langley, BC, won her third straight title on the MJT with excellent rounds of 77-81 (158). “Key to my win was focus and definitely knowing my distances on each hole,” she said. “It feels good (to win), just good!” Rosie Jeon, 13, of Calgary, placed second with scores of 86-79 (165) and Madison Pederson, 15, also of Calgary, settled for third with scores of 93-92 (185).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Christopher Ballesteros, Cody Stout, 16, of Red Deer, AB, Dylan Dalgas, 18, of Canmore, AB, and Jamie Oleksiew. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Nick Scrymgeour, Riley Fleming, Gage Murphy, 18, of Rosebud, AB, and Madison Pedersen.

The final MJT stop in the province this season is the Alberta PGA Junior Championship presented by Macleod Savings and Credit Union at Nanton Golf Club in Nanton, AB, on August 11th and 12th – a qualifier for the China Junior Open.
