GOOD FRIDAY FOR GUSTAVSP AT MJT’S CANACCORD CAPITAL CITY SERIES

Vancouver, B.C. – March 21st was indeed Good Friday for Zorast Gustavsp, 17, of Richmond, B.C., who claimed low overall score and the Boys 17 and up division title in the second and final stop of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Canaccord Capital City Series at Fraserview Golf Club in Vancouver.

"Playing on the MJT puts me in pressure situations and allows me to look at what aspects of my game I need to improve on," said Gustavsp, who shot 74 in the one-day tournament under chilly conditions. "This is my first win in a major tournament so I am proud to finally reap the rewards of all the hard work I have put in over the years." Runner-up in his division was Ryan Brooks, 19, of Pitt Meadows, B.C., who fired 77, and Charlie Juan, 17, of Richmond, placed third with a score of 81.

In the Boys 14-16 division, T. J. McColl, 16, of Surrey, B.C., edged Ryan Grill, 15, of Abbotsford, B.C., by one stroke to win with a score of 75. “The MJT has helped me gain confidence while playing against tough competition,” said McColl, who cited the keys to his victory as hitting several greens and fairly good putting. Third place behind Grill in the division went to Tom Park, 16, of Burnaby, B.C., who shot 80.

Richard Zhang, 13, of Richmond, claimed victory in the Boys 13 and under division after posting a score of 81, beating runner-up Edward Li, 13, of Vancouver, by two strokes. "It means a lot to win because it’s my first tournament this season," said Zhang. "The MJT helps me compete and helps me hit shots under pressure," he added, stating his goal this season is to improve his short game. Third spot in the division went to Oscar Baek, 12, of Coquitlam, B.C., who shot 88.

Christopher Ballesteros, 9, of Vancouver, shot a brilliant 77 off the red tees to win a special prize for boys 10 and under in the competition, beating Henry Lee, 9, of Coquitlam, who shot 82.

A thrilled Valentina Trillo, 13, of Port Moody, B.C., won the Girls division after shooting 77, paving the way for a great season on the MJT this year. "I have been working really hard on all aspects of my game," she said, "and my goals are to do my best at every tournament I play, enjoying every bit of it and always improving, no matter what! Playing on the MJT helps me focus more because of all the good players. It also helps me make new friendships, which are really important in our journeys to becoming better people and players." Porsche Campbell, 15, of Vancouver, shot 83 and had to settle for second place after winning the previous tour stop at McCleery Golf Club on March 16th. Ji-Hyun An, 15, of Coquitlam, B.C., came third with a score of 84, after winning both the Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin (KP) competitions among the Girls.

The other division winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive were Edward Li, Jon Strasdin, 15, of Prince George, B.C., and Adam Gelmon, 18, of Surrey, while the Sundog KP winners were Henry Lee, Harrison Clegg, 15, of Langley, B.C., and Ryan Brooks.

As a result of her win and score, Trillo is now shortlisted for an exemption into the World Youth Team Challenge (WYTC) at Bolingbrook Golf Club in Illinois this June. As qualifying continues for various age categories, more finalists for exemptions into the WYTC will be shortlisted from both this tournament and others on the MJT schedule.

The MJT continues the 2008 schedule with the launch of its multi-day tournaments on March 24th and 25th - the HSBC Securities (Canada) Inc. Classic at Morgan Creek Golf Club in Surrey, a qualifier for the Future Collegiate World Tour’s National Championship in Florida this May.
