Locals Dominate MJT Antigonish Stop in Atlantic Canada

ANTIGONISH, NS – The first tournament of the three-event Atlantic Canada series on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s only national junior tour run by Canadian PGA Professionals, ran July 5th and 6th at Antigonish Golf Club in Antigonish, NS.

The Director of Golf at Antigonish, Ed Ryan, noted that rain both days made for wet course conditions. “The course was playing long and the juniors played well considering the conditions,” he said, adding, “we were lucky to get both rounds in.”

Local players dominated the tournament and won every age division. Antigonish juniors Nicholas MacInnis, Josh Bouchie and Ben Allard took first, second and third place respectively in the Boys 17 and up division, with 17-year-old MacInnis shooting 77-78 (155) for the low overall score in the field. “I was able to steady my game after a double bogey on the 5th hole on day two,” said MacInnis. “It means a great deal to win a tournament and have a chance to possibly represent my country.” MacInnis’s score qualifies him for a spot in the Canada-International Friendship Cup at Beach Grove Golf Club in Delta, British Columbia, this August.

Bouchie, 18, fired rounds of 85-76 (161) while Allard shot 81-81 (162) to place third in the division based on best second day score after tying with Scott Morton, 18, of New Glasgow (79-83=162).

Boys 14-16 division winner, also of Antigonish, was Marcus Van Oirschot, 15, who carded rounds of 82-74 (156) to beat runner-up Sean Fraser, 15, of Sackville, by four strokes. “The highlight for me was making three birdies in a row on holes three, four and five,” said Van Oirschot. “It boosts my confidence to win a tournament of this caliber and my goal is to make the Juvenile Provincial Team.” Fraser shot 81-79 (160), while third place in the division was claimed by Dan Ryan, 14, of Antigonish, who fired 83-79 (162).

Local junior Dave MacDonald, 13, easily won the Boys 13 and under division after firing 82-88 (170). MacDonald cited his highlight as being in the woods on the 8th hole and then hitting the ball to five feet of the pin. “Playing on the MJT makes me concentrate better,” he said. “My goal this season is to lower my handicap by two.” Second place went to Antigonish’s Neal Ryan, 12, who shot 89-93, and Morgan Farrell, 13, finished third (113-101).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were all from Antigonish – Dave MacDonald, Dan Ryan and Cory Chisholm, 17. The Sundog Skills Competition divisional winners were Neal Ryan, Marcus Van Oirschot and Ben Allard.

The second MJT stop in Nova Scotia is at The Mountain Golf Club in Truro on July 30th and 31st, where players can also win an exemption into the Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) National Championship in Florida, May 2008. The final tournament is the MJT-CPGA Atlantic Junior Championship at The Links at Penn Hills in Shubenacadie on August 7th and 8th – a qualifier for the 2008 China Junior Open.
