TOMALTY SCORES SPOT TO ARIZONA AT MJT’S GEOCAN ENERGY CLASSIC

CALGARY, AB – Michael Tomalty, 18, of Calgary, AB, edged the rest of the field by one in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) GEOCAN Energy Classic to claim low overall score and a spot in the CAN-USA Team Matches at ASU Karsten Golf Club in Tempe, Arizona, this December. The two-day tournament on August 7th and 8th was held at McKenzie Meadows Golf Club in Calgary, and featured a field of junior golfers from parts of Saskatchewan and British Columbia, as well as from all over Alberta.

Tomalty, a junior member at Pinebrook Golf Club, fired 70-73 (143) and also took home the Boys 17 and up division title. “I struck the ball solid both days and made some key pars down the stretch,” he said, noting that he was telling himself not to make ‘stupid mental errors.’ Runner-up in his division was David Crossley, 17, also of Calgary, who shot 74-73 (147). Third place went to Travis Kemp, 17, of Lethbridge, AB, after he posted scores of 76-72 (148). Harrison Taylor, 17, of Langley, BC, tied for fourth place at 149 total score with Hogan Short, 17, of Lethbridge.

The Boys 14-16 division was won by Chris Cooke, 16, of Canmore Golf Club in Canmore, AB, after he fired 74-70 (144) to edge runner-up Will Shenstone, 15, of Calgary, by one stroke. Shenstone shot 75-70 (145). There was a three-way tie for third place in the division at 149 total score between Jason Thiels, 16, of Olds, AB (76-73), Evan Cowan, 15, of Coaldale (74-75), and Brett Greiner, 15, of Calgary (72-77).

Calgarians dominated the Girls division, with Alex Parker of Pinebrook Golf Club, 17, beating Cecilia Jeon, 15, by two strokes to win the division title. “It feels awesome to win!” she said, after firing 75-77 (152). “I just played a strong mental game and focused on each shot.” Jeon shot 75-79 (154), and third place finisher, Evann Parker, 16, shot 84-80 (164).

Brett Walsh, 13, of Calgary and Canyon Meadows Golf Club, easily won the Boys 13 and under division after creating a great head start with his opening round of even-par 72. He followed this up with a consistent 72 on day two to run away with the top trophy. “I feel proud,” he said, citing the main reasons for his victory as staying calm and knowing he could recover after a bad shot. Second place in the division was a tie at 160 total score between Jason Allard, 13, of Calgary (81-79), and Ian Mmbando, 12, of Lethbridge (79-81).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Brett Walsh, Steven Scheidt, 16, of Calgary, and Brett Jefferis, 17, of Sherwood Park, AB. The Sundog Skills Competition divisional winners were Patrick Murphy, 10, of Crossfield, AB, Bryan Walker 15, of Medicine Hat, AB, Gage Murphy, 17, of Rosebud, AB, and Evann Parker.
