Cowan Qualifies for MJT Team Canada to Texas

STONY PLAIN, AB – Hard rain interrupted the first round of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) stop at Stony Plain Golf Club, with only the Girls and the Boys 13 and under divisions finishing 9 holes. The two-day tournament, which was also a qualifier for the Texas Junior Masters at Colovista Golf Club in Bastrop, TX, this July, was then shortened to 27 holes for these two divisions and 18 holes for Boys 14-16 and 17 and up.

Derek Rucki, 13, of Chestermere, AB, finished with some great play to hold off Colin Williams, 13, of Calgary, AB, among Boys 13 and under. Rucki, who said, “my sand play was key - I hit a bunker shot that hit the pin, stopping a couple of inches away,” came from two shots back on the long, tough and soggy Stony Plain course to finish with 123 total score (42-81) for 27 holes. Williams shot 40-85 (125). Finishing third was another Calgarian, Jason Allard, 13, (43-84=127), who also won both the Mr. Lube Long Drive and the Sundog Skills Competition in the division.

Breanne Neufeld, 17, of Coaldale, AB, continued to dominate the Girls division, winning her fourth event in as many starts with scores of 37-77 (114) for 27 holes. “I executed my game plan throughout the entire tournament,” she stated. “I wanted to hit solid shots coming down the stretch and was just focused on playing well.” Runner-up Kelly Amundrud, 16, of Calgary, was tied for the lead with Neufeld after day one, but finished five strokes back with 119 total score (37-82). In third place, Jocelyn Alford, 17, of Calgary played well shooting 39-85 (124) and also won both the Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog Skills Competition among the girls.
