Brother-Sister Duo Win Divisions at MJT Task Tools Classic

PITT MEADOWS, B.C. – The brother-sister duo of Andy and Jennifer Yang from Coquitlam pleased their parents no end by winning both their respective age divisions in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Task Tools Classic at Swan-e-set Bay Resort in Pitt Meadows last weekend. The siblings won the Boys 13 and under and Girls division titles respectively, with 12-year-old Jennifer also claiming the low overall tournament score in the 84-player strong field.

Jennifer Yang, who started out on the MJT at age 11 shooting in the 90’s, finally broke 80 for the first time this season with a 79 at an event back in April. This past weekend at the Task Tools Classic she posted her best tournament scores to date by firing an outstanding pair of 72’s for a 144 total score, running away with the Girls division title. “”I knew I had won when I hit two-under on the back nine and it felt really good because this is my first time winning,” she said. “My shots were really good and I was lucky. My goal is to shoot in the 70’s in all the tournaments.”

Runner-up among the Girls was Kristina Gargaro, 16, of Port Moody, who shot 81-74 (155), while third place went to Emily Kim, 15, of Port Coquitlam (77-79=156).

Andy Yang, 13, notched up his third win this year in Boys 13 and under on the MJT with scores of 78-77 (155), edging Chris Li, 13, of Coquitlam, by two strokes. “My goal was to win at least three times this season on the MJT so I guess my mission is accomplished,” said Yang. “I think my putts were the key to my success here, but I knew I had won on the 17th tee when I hit a great tee shot.”

Runner-up Li posted scores of 76-81 (157). Harrison Clegg, 13, of Langley, shot 80-83 (163) to come in third in the division.

A tie for first place in the Boys 14-16 division was decided on countback between Dong Su, 16, of Richmond, and Sean Craigon, 16, of Maple Ridge. Craigon, who held the first round lead with a fine 72, fired 74 on day two for a 146 total. Su’s back-to-back rounds of 73 scooped him the champion’s trophy based on best second day score. “My putting helped me a lot and I hit my drives straight every time,” he said. “My goal is to win the Canadian Junior, and I hope I play well in all my tournaments in the U.S.”

Four strokes back of Craigon was Shael Mazzone, 15, of Coquitlam, who shot 77-73 (150) to place third in the division.

Tight competition reigned in the Boys 17 and up division, with the winner’s trophy ultimately going to Ted Cho, 17, of Surrey, who fired rounds of 75-71 (146) to edge both Ryan Brooks, 18, of Pitt Meadows, and Lucas Bogdan, 18, of Abbotsford, by one stroke. “I knew I had won when I sunk my birdie putt on my last hole,” said Cho. “It feels great. My goal is to win more tournaments and get better.” Brooks shot 78-69 and Bogdan 75-72 to tie at 147 total score in second place.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Andy Yang, Dong Su, Chris Utting, 19, of Surrey, and Jisoo Keel, 10, of Coquitlam. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Mason Pimental, 12, of Surrey, Riley Balson, 16, of Kamloops, Ted Cho and Jennifer Yang.

The MJT continues its British Columbia schedule on July 8th and 9th at St. Eugene Mission Golf Resort in Cranbrook, followed by July 10th and 11th at Chilliwack Golf Club in Chilliwack. For more information or to register, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
