Frost fires up MJT VOVEX Golf Series Spring Invitational at Galt

 

Young golfing talent on Canada’s number one Junior Tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), showcased their skills in the Ontario season opening MJT VOVEX Golf Series Spring Invitational, held at the private Galt Country Club in Cambridge on April 27-28. Handpicked from the MJT 2023 Order of Merit, the field boasted promising young players eager to make their mark. The two-day tournament marked the first of the VOVEX Golf Series on the 2024 MJT Ontario schedule, with the next event running May 11-12 at Flamborough Hills Golf Club in Copetown.


Remarkable performances were witnessed in the five divisions despite varying weather conditions, highlighted by exceptional scoring from Ethan Frost, 17, of Barrie, ON, (68, 69=137) who won the MJT Junior and Low Overall Boys titles. Low Overall Girl was Karolyn Zeng, 18, of Maple, ON, (73,76=149) who took the MJT Girls 15-19 title in style. The other high-performing division winners with some great scoring for the two days were Alexis Card, 13, of Cambridge, ON, in MJT Girls U15 (155), Justin Chu, 14, of North York, ON, in MJT Bantam Boys (143), and Terrence Deng, 14, from Toronto, ON, in MJT Juvenile Boys (145). Each winner was rewarded with a trophy and pair of fabulous VOVEX rangefinders.


Almost a dozen qualifying spots were awarded into high level tournaments, namely the FCG World Golf Championship in Rancho Mirage, CA, the PGA Tour America’s-affiliated MJT Future Stars presented by ATB in Sherwood Park, AB, and the East Coast Junior Championship in Moncton, New Brunswick. Recipients of these exemptions are noted below, along with quotes from division winners and top finisher scores.

For the second consecutive year, Card, a talented 12-year-old golfer hailing from Cambridge, demonstrated her prowess by securing the MJT Girls U15 division title. Reflecting on her achievement, Alexis stated, "It feels great to start off the season with a win!" Her dedication and skill have once again propelled her to victory, setting a promising tone for the season ahead.

Karolyn Zeng, from Maple, ON, who won the MJT Girls 15-18 and Low Overall Girls title, stated, "I'm happy with the score I shot this weekend." She continued, saying, "I'm really grateful for the opportunity to play in such a great start to the season. The course was well maintained."
 

MJT Bantam Boys: Par 70, Ydg 5942, Slope/Rating 115/68.0

Hailing from North York, ON, 14-year-old Justin Chu clinched the MJT Bantam Boys division title with an impressive display, carding 11 birdies. Reflecting on his win, Chu expressed, "I was happy to hit solid shots. A great start to the 2024 season." He attributed his success to his putting prowess, which helped secure his lead.

14-year-old Terrence Deng from Toronto, ON, showcased his exceptional skills with an impressive back nine, carding four birdies and an eagle to secure the title of MJT Juvenile Boys champion. Reflecting on his victory, Deng stated, "It feels amazing. All of the hard work that I put in this offseason is paying off." Taking the risk to place himself up a division proved to be a rewarding decision, as Deng admitted, "It gave me some pressure coming into the tournament.”

Low Overall Boys leader and MJT Junior Boys winner, Ethan Frost, fired two impressive rounds of 68-67, finishing with a three-stroke victory. “It feels good,” said  Frost. “My short game – putting/chipping was saving me because unfortunately my tee game wasn’t the strongest.”
