Welland, ON - (September 28, 2015) – “This tournament was a spectacular start to what we plan to be a long-standing fall tradition,” said Dave Smallwood, MJT National Director of Player Development, after perfect weather and course conditions topped off a successful inaugural MJT International Team Challenge at Hunters Pointe Golf Club near Niagara Falls in Ontario this past weekend.

Canada’s number one-played Junior Golf Tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour presented by Boston Pizza, hosted six-player teams from Canada and the USA in a daily best four of six aggregate team scoring format on September 26th and 27th, in a tournament which featured teams mainly from across Canada including elite players from the Golf Association of Ontario’s (GAO) Regional Team Program and the Golf Canada Junior Golf Development Centres. The event also included an individual 36 holes medal play format for both the boys and girls divisions.

It was a very close race with only one point separating the top three teams. Team Glen Abbey Golf Club won first place with 594 points over the Golf Association of Ontario’s Team Essex Kent 2 (595 points). Third place went to GAO Team Ottawa (596 points) and MJT Team Alberta rounded out the top four with 602 points.

The four boys and two girls on Team Glen Abbey from Ontario were John Burghardt of Oakville, Marcus Rodrigues of Burlington, Matt Anderson of Mississauga, Freddy D'Angelo of Fonthill, Logan Hackett and Natasha Stasiuk, both from Oakville.

The individual Boys Champion was GAO Team Ottawa’s Ty Celone, 16, of Long Sault, ON, who fired 69, 71 (140). Runner-up was GAO Team Niagara 2’s Ethan Bennett, of Stoney Creek, ON, who closed with the low round of the tournament (76, 67=143). There was a tie for third place at 145 total score between MJT Team Alberta’s Jeremy Rose of Calgary, AB (72, 73) and GAO Team Essex Kent 1’s Marcus Slipchuk of Amherstburg, ON (70, 75).

Individual Girls Champion out of the 30-strong field of girls was GAO Team York’s Ellice Hong, 16, of Thornhill, ON, after she shot 76, 73 (149) for a four stroke victory over GAO Team Ottawa’s Diana McDonald of Kingston, ON (80, 73=153).
