DEER VALLEY STERN TEST FOR LAUNCH OF 2003 CANADIAN PGA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Deer Valley, SK ? Deer Valley Golf Estates in Deer Valley, Sask., played host to the first in the Western Canada Junior Golf Tour?s 2003 Canadian PGA Junior Championships Series this past weekend. The field of 74 juniors in the CPGA-Saskatchewan Junior Championship presented by Mazda played arguably the best course on the Tour to date, believes Dean Spriddle, WCJGT Tournament Director and Canadian PGA Teacher of the Year 2002.

?Deer Valley is an outstanding golf course,? said Spriddle, ?Plus you had to think where to place the ball on every hole with those difficult pin placements. It was a good test of golf.?

The challenging course and 100 kph winds during the second round did not deter 19-year-old Brook Scott from Port Coquitlam, B.C., from posting two excellent scores of 75-76 (151) which won him the Boys 17 and Up Division title by one stroke over first round leader Robin Vallis from Aberdeen, Sask. This is Scott?s third win on the WCJGT and earned him a $450 R.E.S.P., a Callaway GBBII driver, and an exemption into the Alberta PGA Junior Championship at Heritage Pointe Golf Club in Calgary this August.

The Boys 14-16 Division was won by Sean Samoluk from Calgary, Alta., who posted rounds of 81-81 (162) to beat Lethbridge?s Brian Wolsey by one stroke. Wolsey has now placed second in three consecutive events and is due for a win next time. Close behind tied at 164 were Andrew Wilson and Andrew Zaba, both from Regina.

Riley Unger from Plum Coulee, MB, was the clear winner in the Boys 13 and Under Division with his scores of 82-77 (159), closing out Dallas Mengel from Watrous, Sask., by eight strokes.

The Girls Division witnessed a battle between Denielle Neufeld and Alberta Provincial Team Member Danielle Renner, both from Coaldale, who tied with total scores of 167. Neufeld?s opening round of 76 was the first time she has broken 80 in competition, however she lost first place prize to Renner on a countback. Stacey Bieber from Winnipeg, MB, placed third.

Every Division winner received R.E.S.P. or scholarship monies courtesy of presenting sponsor of the series, Mazda Canada. "We are very pleased to support this series of major junior golf tournaments in Western Canada," said Dennis Andrews, Regional Manager, Mazda.

Division winners in the Sundog Skills Competition were Dallas Mengel, Geoff Pettigrew and Amanda Hungle from Regina, and Chris McClelland from Saskatoon.

The non-profit Western Canada Junior Golf Tour is presented by Boston Pizza and hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions. The Tour is building on its success in the four Western provinces by expanding into Ontario this summer under the Nationwide Junior Golf Tour banner.
