Fine Play Showcases Western Canada Junior Golf Tour Event At Lacombe Golf Course

Lacombe, AB ? Junior golfers from across the West took time out of their summer holidays to do battle at the spectacular 78-year-old Lacombe Golf and Country Club when the Western Canada Junior Golf Tour rolled into town this past Thursday and Friday.

The early morning rain during Friday?s second round of the WCJGT Junior at Lacombe event subsided in favour of glorious sunshine which allowed some fine scoring to take place. Top finishers included Red Deer?s Nicholas Morelli, Fort Saskatchewan?s Casey Clifton, Calgary?s James Scott and Susan Nam of Edmonton.

Clifton, who posted impressive rounds of 73-71 (144) to take top spot in the Boys 14-16 division, said he was delighted with the outcome.

?That was a fun event and I was pumped to win,? he said.

Kyle Morrison of Red Deer finished six strokes back of Clifton, posting rounds of 75-75 (150). Three players tied for third with a total score of 154: Calgary?s Joseph Knight, Millarville?s Tom Cowan, and Breton?s Brandt Levers.

James Scott recorded a decisive win among Boys 17-and-up, finishing with rounds of 77-71 (148), and five strokes ahead of his nearest challengers, St. Albert?s Dylan Retz and Coogan Mitchell, who both posted two-day tallies of 153.

Nicholas Morelli, who emerged on top among Boys 13-and-under with rounds of 80-76 (156), said he was pleased with his overall performance. ?I played great and was excited to win,? he said.

Edmonton?s Neil Pulongbarit finished second in this division, shooting 79-81 (160), while Brendan Engle of Chilliwack, B.C. shot 83-78 (161) to place third.

Meantime, Nam was victorious among the girls, posting 82 the first day and an impressive below par 70 on the second. Whitney Cox of Edmonton shot 74-79 (153) to place second, while Innisfail?s Rylee Plitz shot 81-83 (164) to finish third. Like Morelli, Nam said she was delighted with her play.

?(I was) happy with today,? she said. ?Everything seemed to drop.?

Winners of the Sundog Skills competition included Tanner Laidlaw and Bari-Lynn Erais, both of Lethbridge, Mark Schurer of Calgary and Tyler Jones of Red Deer.

The non-profit Western Canada Junior Golf Tour is presented by Boston Pizza and hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions. The Tour is building on its success in the four Western provinces by expanding into Ontario this summer under the Nationwide Junior Golf Tour banner.

The next Alberta event will be the WCJGT Junior at McKenzie Meadows in Calgary, August 5-6. For more information, or to register, call 1-877-859-GOLF or visit www.wcjgt.com.
