JUNIOR TOUR LAUNCHES 5TH SEASON WITH ALCAN JR. AT POINT ROBERTS

March 20, 2003

POINT ROBERTS, WA. ? Many of Western Canada?s top junior golfers were forced to battle the wind and the rain ? as well as each other ? when the Western Canada Junior Golf Tour kicked off its 2003 season with the Alcan Spring Series at Point Roberts Golf and Country Club.

?It was challenging at times, but we tried to deal with it as best as we could,? said Jessica Potter of Coquitlam, who posted scores of 81-84 to finish at 165 and win the Girls? Division in the two-day Alcan Junior on March 18-19.

Almost 90 golfers from throughout Western Canada and Washington took part in the event, which launched a 22-event season for the WCJGT at some of the premier courses in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Jonnie Motomochi of White Rock, whose scores of 76-75 earned him the championship trophy in the Boys 13-and-under Division, said conditions at the Point Roberts course were surprisingly good, in spite of the wind and persistent rain.

?It?s amazing how well it held up,? said Motomochi. ?The greens were lightning fast on the first day. (On the second) they were a little slower because of the rain, but overall it was pretty good.?

Motomochi took his division by nine strokes over four other players, all with a 160 finish: Thomas Hay of Langley, Thomas Petts and Nick McKnight, both of North Vancouver, and Richard Lee of Vancouver.

Brendon Hall of Abbotsford posted a second-day score of 76 to finish at 157 and win the Boys 17-and-up Division, edging Port Moody?s Sam Wilkins, at 158, and Ryan Bright and Cody Salo, both of Vernon, who were tied at 160.

Competition in the Boys 14-16 Division was particularly fierce, ending with a first-place tie between Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, and Darren Wallace of Langley, who both shot 156. Richmond?s Richard Conlin was third, with 165, edging Josh Haywood of Pitt Meadows at 166.

Alison Kirk-Owen of West Vancouver was second in the Girls? Division, shooting 83-87 for a two-day 170.

This tournament qualified players for the Royal Canadian Golf Association?s Future Links Pacific Championship, to be held over the Easter weekend at Royal Colwood Golf Course in Victoria.

Winners of the Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competition included Motomochi in 13-and-under; Chelsea Lollar of Rosedale in the Girls Division., Devin Carrey of Langley in Boys 14-16; and Ryan Bright of Vernon in Boys 17-and-up.

The non-profit Tour, which is presented by Boston Pizza International and run by golf professionals, is open to boys and girls in four age divisions, from 10 to 23 years of age. This year marks the Tour?s fifth season. For more information, please visit www.wcjgt.com or call 1-877-859-GOLF.
