WESTERN CANADA JUNIOR GOLF TOUR QUALIFIES PLAYER FOR JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Lethbridge, AB ? Wind, rain and sub-zero temperatures didn?t prevent some of the Prairies? top junior golfers from posting impressive results when they gathered last weekend for the WCJGT?s opening event of the season in Alberta, the 1st Choice Savings Junior at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort.

The temperature, including wind chill, was as low as minus four degrees Celsius, while winds were clocked at 35 kph.

However Boys 13 and under division winner, Rhys Royer, pointed out that it could have been worse. ?I?m just happy to be playing, with two feet of snow in Calgary,? he said., referring to the blizzard that had hit that area of the province on the weekend.

Royer shot a total of 114 in the division?s weather-shortened 27-hole event and qualified for the Callaway Golf Junior World Championships in San Diego, California, July 15-18. Dallas Mengel of Watrous, Sask., was second with a total score of 129, while Edmonton?s Neil Pulongbarit was third with 132.

In the Boys 14-16 division, Jesse Galvon?s remarkable 69 on day one went to waste as his second round 77 left him three strokes behind Mitchell Fox of Okotoks. ?It was colder than Scotland,? said Fox, who shot rounds of 71-72 to win the Boys 14-16 division. Hometown golfer Brian Wolsey was three strokes behind Fox, shooting 75-71, while Galvon finished third.

Calgary?s Jordan Irwin claimed his first win of the season by taking the Boys 17-and-up division. He rolled in a five-foot putt on the final hole to post a 75, finishing at 151 and a stroke ahead of Graeme Bishop of Lethbridge. Bishop?s triple bogey on the 35th hole allowed Irwin to claim victory. ?I just pushed the things that my coach and I had been working on and they worked,? said Irwin. Austin Lacey of Calgary and Tyler Kemp of Lethbridge tied for third place with 154.

Bari-Lynn Erais of Lethbridge won the Girls Division, also shortened to 27 holes, with a 121 total. Mackenzie Renner of Coaldale was second, with 125, while Candace Deschamps of Calgary finished a stroke behind at 126. ?I played well on day one,? said Erais. ?I just kept trying. The weather was awful.?

The youngest player in the field, 10 year old Ryan O?Donnell, won his division?s Sundog Skills Competition. Other Skills Competition winners were Brandt Levers, Brett Cooper and Bari-Lynn Erais.

The next event is at Land-O-Lakes GC in Coaldale, May 10-11. For more information or to register call 1-877-859-GOLF
