GREAT GOLF AT WESTERN CANADA JUNIOR TOUR?S MCKENZIE MEADOWS EVENT

Calgary, AB ? Great scores highlighted the Western Canada Junior Golf Tour?s stop at McKenzie Meadows Golf Club in Calgary this week, where a full field of junior golfers from Saskatchewan, British Columbia and all over Alberta competed in four age divisions in the two-day event.

Brandon Markiw from Sherwood Park posted sizzling back-to-back rounds of 70-70 for a four-under-par total score of 140 which won the Boys 14-16 division by three strokes over local Trevor Edwards (72-71=143). ?I feel pretty good,? said Markiw. ?I struck the ball fairly well both days and a few putts fell at key times.?

Behind Markiw and Edwards was Glen Nesbitt from Calgary, whose three-under-par final round of 69 boosted him to a third place finish in this competitive division.

Sub-par scores also featured in the Boys 17 and Up division, where Steven Beil from Stony Plain followed up his opening round of 68 with a 74 to finish at a two-under-par 142. This clinched the win over Byron Olson from Calgary (72-71=143). ?I felt like I had lost the tournament on the 5th hole when I made a triple bogey,? said Beil, ?so it feels great!?

Ryan Grant from Calgary shot 72-75 (147) to place third in this division.

Even par scores won the Boys 13 and Under division for Calgarian Rhys Royer, whose back-to-back rounds of 72 secured the title over runner-up Dallas Mengel from Watrous, Saskatchewan, by four strokes. Placing third was Jace Barros from Edmonton.

?I didn?t make a lot of putts today,? said Royer, ?so I had to hit good shots all day. Dallas was playing great so I had to keep focused until we finished. On the second last hole I knew that I had won as I figured Jace had to shoot 66 or lower to beat me.?

The Girls Division title went to Megan Claxton from Calgary, who shot 80-79 for a 159 total score. ?The key to my victory was keeping my head up even when I had some bad holes,? said Claxton, who beat runner-up Juanita Rico, also of Calgary, by two strokes.

In third place was Tiffnee Wiens from Prince Rupert, BC, (84-78=162).

Winners in the Sundog Skills Competition were Steven Beil, Trevor Edwards, Rhys Royer and Juanita Rico.
