GREAT SCORES HIGHLIGHT BC PGA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Cloverdale, B.C. ? Great scores highlighted the Western Canada Junior Golf Tour?s second annual BC PGA Junior Championship presented by Mazda Canada this past week, which was held at Northview Golf Club in Cloverdale, BC.

Over 100 juniors from across the province and parts of the Yukon enjoyed excellent golfing conditions during the 54 hole tournament, which featured a cut after 36 holes to the top 60 players and ties.

All the winners in the three Boys divisions finished under par for the tournament, and in the Girls division, Chelsey Lollar set the competitive course record for Ladies with her 2-under par final round of 70.

Stephen Carroll, Executive Director of the BC Professional Golfers? Association, presented the Overall Tournament Champion Vase to 17-year-old Jacob Hunt from Mission, who shot 71-71-71 for a total score of a three-under-par 213. Hunt also won the Boys 17 and Up Champion?s trophy, a Callaway Great Big Bertha II driver and a share of the $1,500 in R.E.S.P.?s awarded by Mazda Canada.

?It?s a pretty big tournament and it feels really good to play well for three straight days,? said Hunt. ?I struck the ball really well and was two-putting everything.?

In second and third place behind Hunt were Matthew Hooper from Kelowna, and Philip Mullin from Whitehorse, YK, respectively.

In the Boys 14-16 division, Nicholas Gagne finished at one-under-par for the tournament with scores of 70-71-74 (215) to win the title by two strokes over Richmond Country Club?s representative, Andrew Robb (73-71-73=217).

?I was five under on the Par 5?s for the tournament and only made six bogeys,? said Gagne, ?but I didn?t know that I had won until I hit my second shot on the 18th hole ? I felt relief as I was kind of scrambling on the last round.?

Gagne favourably compared this event to the East Aurora International Junior Masters in New York state, where he recently competed after qualifying through the Western Canada Junior Golf Tour. ?Both had a good tournament feel,? he said.

In third place behind Gagne and Robb was Adam Cornelson from Langley (75-76-73=224), followed by three players who tied for fourth place with total scores of 227: Devin Carrey (Langley), Brendan Peters (Maple Ridge) and Josh Haywood (Pitt Meadows).

Sub-par scores again featured in the Boys 13 and under division, where North Vancouver?s Eugene Wong put together the tournament low round of 68 with scores of 72 and 75 to win by a clear margin over Steven Lee from Port Coquitlam. Wong, who recently placed second in his age group at the 2003 Junior World Championships in San Diego, CA, said he won by playing safe and smart.

In third place behind Wong and Lee was Riley Wheeldon from Comox (73-74-76=223).

Record-setting Chelsey Lollar won the Girls division with her rounds of 83-75-70 (228) and second place went to 12-year-old Sue Kim from Langley. Caroline Kim from Port Coquitlam placed third.

Winners in the Sundog Skills Competition were Eugene Wong, Rory Blanchard (North Vancouver), Kris Howes (Abbotsford) and Pamela Burneski (Surrey).

The non-profit Western Canada Junior Golf Tour is presented by Boston Pizza and hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions. The Tour is building on its success in the four Western provinces by expanding into Ontario this summer under the Nationwide Junior Golf Tour banner.

The next local event is the Cattermole Timber Junior at Okanagan Golf Club in Kelowna, August 10-11. For more information, please call 1-877-859-GOLF or visit www.wcjgt.com.
