ACE FOR 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL AT WCJGT JUNIOR AT MAGRATH GOLF CLUB

Magrath, AB ? Young Anisha Chong from Lethbridge, AB, executed the perfect shot during the first round of the Western Canada Junior Golf Tour?s event at Magrath Golf Course on July 3-4. Her 135 yard drive with a 6 iron aced the 17th hole, despite the very windy conditions, and landed her a $100 gift certificate.

Chong, who has been playing on the WCJGT since she was 9, has consistently placed in the Top 10 in her division this season.

The winner of the Girls division at the Magrath tournament was Candace Deschamps from Calgary, whose final round of 79 pulled her ahead of six other players to take the title. ?I knew that I was playing well ? making three birdies on the front nine,? said Deschamps.

Runner up with a two-day total score of 172 was Karla Gustafson, also from Calgary, with Coaldale?s Breanne Neufeld in third place.

The Boys 13 and under division was won by Jace Barros of Edmonton, his first win this season after two second place finishes. ?I never thought I had an advantage,? said Barros, ?I just kept playing hard with no three-putts. The challenge was getting the ball to stay on the greens in the wind.?

Young Dallas Mengel, all the way from Watrous, SK, was runner-up with scores of 76-86 (162), and James Ridley from Calgary shot 82-82 (164) to place third.

Golf stand-out Mitchell Fox from Okotoks continued his winning ways on the WCJGT shooting 76-71 (147) to secure a 6 stroke victory over Tim Webb from Calgary, in the Boys 14-16 division. ?I made all the six-footers today,? said Fox. ?When I birdied holes 4 and 6 ? I knew that I had a big lead.?

James Scott, also from Calgary, placed third with scores of 79-75 (154).

The tight race in the Boys 17 and up division was won by Michael Knight from Calgary, whose even Par back-to-back 72?s closed out the rest of the field. Knight felt his strength lay in always keeping the ball in play: ?I had to manufacture shots, keeping the ball low and always punching irons below the wind.?
Graeme Bishop from Lethbridge was runner-up and Devon Deobald from Shaunavon, Sask., placed third with total scores of 151 and 152 respectively.

Division winners in the Sundog Skills Competition were Ryan O?Donnell (Lethbridge), Jennifer McLean (Devon), Thomas Reid (Carstairs) and Brock Ott (Foremost).

The non-profit Western Canada Junior Golf Tour is presented by Boston Pizza and hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions. The Tour is building on its success in the four Western provinces by expanding into Ontario this summer under the Nationwide Junior Golf Tour banner.

The next regional WCJGT event is at St. Eugene Mission Golf Resort in Cranbrook, BC, July 21-22. For more information or to register please visit www.wcjgt.com or call toll-free 1-877-859-GOLF.
