GREAT SCORES AS WESTERN CANADA JUNIOR GOLF TOUR TEES OFF SUMMER SERIES AT BELMONT

Langley, B.C. ? Many top junior golfers proved their games were completely up to par last weekend when the Western Canada Junior Golf Tour kicked off its 2003 Summer Series with the Cattermole Timber Junior at Belmont Golf Course.

The two-day tournament, presented with a full field of 119 players, featured impressive par-70 rounds in most age divisions, and even a hole-in-one by one player: Teddy Ho of Surrey.

Jonnie Motomochi of White Rock won the Boys 13-and-under division by making a birdie on the first hole of a playoff against Vancouver?s Richard Lee. Both players, arguably the best in Canada in this division, had finished with a two-day 141 tally.

?I haven?t won a playoff, so it felt really good,? said Motomochi, adding that the win marked his first playoff victory in three career attempts. He shot 71-70, while Lee posted the reverse scores of 70-71.

Cameron Harris of Maple Ridge finished third with scores of 76-70 (146).

In the Boys 14-16 division, Greg Pool of Langley shot 70 on the second day to win with a total score of 143. Pool, who said it was his putting that helped him put away the win, was confident midway through the back nine that he?d clinched the trophy.

?I knew after the 14th or 15th hole,? he said. ?I realized that I had a comfortable lead at that point.?
West Vancouver?s Matt Hastings had rounds of 72-73 (145) to finish second, while Langley?s Darren Wallace, at 72-76 (148), was third.

Susan Nam of Edmonton shot 74-74 (148) to earn first place in the Girls division. Nam was presented her trophy by tournament sponsor Mike Mohammed of Cattermole Timber, a long-time supporter of the Tour.

Dominique Pytlewski of North Vancouver shot 77-80 (157) to finish second among the girls, while Helen Jung of Maple Ridge placed third.

Pytlewski will join Richard Lee and Jonnie Motomochi in San Diego next month to take part in the Callaway Golf Junior World Championships, while Jung has travel plans of her own. The 17-year-old will be heading to Idaho State University in the Fall, where she will be attending on a scholarship.

Jacob Hunt, who posted rounds of 70-72 (142) to take the Boys 17-and-up group, said solid ball-striking was the key to his victory.

?I feel relieved,? said Hunt. ?I haven?t won in a year-and-a-half (on the Tour). It?s a monkey off my back.?

Hunt finished four strokes ahead of Teddy Ho, but said he didn?t really feel he?d clinched the win until he sank his final putt on the 18th hole. Ho, meantime, knocked in his ace on the first day on the tournament, holing a shot on the tough 210 yard third hole.

Finishing third was Coquitlam?s Josh Lunden, who shot 75-73 for a 148 finish.

Winners of the Sundog Skills Competition were Brendan Engle of Chilliwack, Gordon Yakura of West Vancouver, Matthew Hooper of Kelowna and Chelsea Lollar of Rosedale.

The non-profit Western Canada Junior Golf Tour is presented by Boston Pizza and hosts tournaments for boys and girls in four age divisions. The Tour is building on its success in Western Canada by expanding into Ontario this summer under the Nationwide Junior Golf Tour banner.

The next B.C. event is the Mr. Lube Junior at Boundary Shores in Ladner, July 15-16. For more information, or to register, please call 604-943-1645 or visit www.wcjgt.com.
