Blistering Pace Set at WCJGT’s Belmont Tournament

TSAWWASSEN, BC: The Boston Pizza-presented Western Canada Junior Golf Tour made its first stop in Langley, BC, this past weekend, for the Lindsay Kenney Junior at Belmont Golf Course. The field of 107 juniors, who came from as far afield as Winnipeg and Prince Rupert, enjoyed excellent golfing weather all weekend.

The highlight of the tournament was an opening round 66 fired by Vancouver’s Mitch Ellis, who followed this up with a second day’s score of 75 to win the Boys 13-14 Division title with a 141 total score. Runner-up Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford shot 73,71 for a 144 total - a commendable debut on the WCJGT.

Another sub-par opening round of 67 shot by 11-year-old Richard Lee from Vancouver also led to overall victory in the Boys 12 & Under Division. Lee continued his winning ways on the Tour by firing rounds of 67,74 for a 141 total.

There was heated competition in the Boys 15 & 16 Division between Robin Buntain (Vancouver), Brendon Hall (Mt. Lehman, Abbotsford), Jacob Hunt (Mission), Matthew Hooper (Kelowna), Blake-Rowe-Sleeman (Coquitlam), Jeffrey Dagg (Surrey) and Taylor Willms (Victoria). Buntain withstood the pressure with rounds of 70,73 (143) and won by two strokes over Jeffrey Dagg and Brendon Hall (tied at 145). Rowe-Sleeman came in 4th with a 146 total.

Abbotsford’s Steven Dales won by retrogression after a tie for first place in the Boys 17 & 18 Division with Andrew Holtz of Pitt Meadows. Third place went to Don Seol from South Surrey, who is on his way to the 50th International Junior Masters in New York this week, after winning an exemption in a previous WCJGT event.

In the Girls Division, Eom Ji Park (Vancouver) was challenged in the first round by a 74 from Jessica Potter (Coquitlam). Park’s even par 70 on the second day, however, held off a hard-charging Rosy Kim (Langley) to win her 4th WCJGT title this season with a 142 total. Potter came in third with a 153 total.

The Intermediate Division witnessed great play from Ron Killmer (Bellingham, WA), Kevin Miller (Surrey) and Aaron Collier (Coquitlam), who were all tied at 71 after the first round. Killmer’s steady play and second round score of 72 for a 143 total captured the title by one stroke over Miller .

In addition to Callaway Steelhead III drivers, all Division winners received automatic exemptions into the second annual WCJGT Invitational at the Air Canada Championship at Northview GC, Cloverdale, BC, August 31-September 1, 2002

Winners of the Sundog Eyewear Skills Competition were Eugene Wong (North Vancouver), Richard Conlin (Richmond), Scott Lubchynski (Kelowna), Daniel Brown (North Vancouver), Chelsey Lollar (Rosedale) and Nicholas Filipponi (Courtenay).

The next WCJGT event in B.C. is the Western Canada BC PGA Junior Championship presented by Mazda at Northview GC, Cloverdale, BC, July 2-4, 2002.
