WESTERN CANADA BC PGA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP |

The inaugural Western
Canada BC PGA Junior Championship, presented by Mazda, wrapped up July
4 at Northview Golf & Country Club in Surrey, B.C. The 54-hole
Championship was played on both the Canal and Ridge Courses, July 2nd
through 4th.
The tournament was highlighted by some exceptional scores. In the 12
and Under division, Richard Lee of Vancouver won by three shots over
Lucas Snoey of Camas, Washington. Lee carded rounds of 71, 70 and 74
for an unbelievable one-under par three day total. Lee is all of 11
years old.
Wayne Short of Chilliwack continued his brilliant play in round 3,
firing a 71 to go along with his 68 and 70 from the first two rounds.
Short was under par in all three rounds, and finished 7-under par for
the Championship to claim the 13 & 14 year old division.
Victoria's Taylor Willms hung on to claim the Boys 15 & 16 division,
with consistent rounds of 74, 72 and 75. In the competitive 17 & 18
year old division, Gordie Swensen of Richmond carded rounds of 71, 73
and 73 to win by four over Ryan Woodhouse of Kanata, Ontario. Kevin
Klebe of Cultus Lake, former Canadian Junior Boys Champion,
overpowered the Northview Course, finishing 13-under par over three
days with rounds of 69, 68 and 66. Anna Kim of Vancouver won the
female division with rounds of 74, 77 and 77 respectively.
Mazda Canada representative Larry Feagan presented Wayne Short, Taylor
Willms and Gordie Swenson each with $500 scholarships in addition to
their other first place prizes.
Winners in the Sundog Eyewear Skills Competition were Eugene Wong
(North Vancouver), Stephen Lim (Vancouver), Mark Wilson (Kamloops),
Ryan Bright (Vernon), Anna Kim (Vancouver) and Kelsy Christensen
(Cloverdale).
The BC PGA in partnership with the Western Canada Junior Golf Tour and
tournament sponsor Mazda joined forces to present this inaugural
junior golf championship to over 125 junior golfers from across BC,
Washington State, the Yukon and Alberta. The WCJGT, presented by
Boston Pizza International, has proven itself to be the fastest
growing junior tour in Canada and is run by CPGA members with 21
events from Point Roberts, WA, to Regina, SK, and of course with
several tournaments taking place across British Columbia.
The next WCJGT event is the TriStar Industries Junior at Squamish
Valley GC, Squamish, B.C., July 22-23, 2002. For more information
