JUNIORS BATTLE 80 KPH WINDS AT CONNAUGHT CG

MEDICINE HAT, AB: The Connaught Golf Course in Medicine Hat played host to the Boston Pizza-presented Western Canada Junior Golf Tour on June 28 & 29, with competitors coming from all over Alberta as well as from British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

In some atrocious winds and intermittant thunder showers, the players battled hard and long, and the field did remarkably well to post the scores that they did with winds gusting over 80 kph. In the Girls Division, Calgary's Kari Broshko had a 33 on the front nine on day two, which paved the way for her two shot victory over a fast-charging Dannielle Renner from Lethbridge. Broshko's rounds of 79, 78 were excellent in those weather conditions and on a tough golf course.

Jace Barros from Edmonton continued his fine run of late in the Boys 12 & Under Division with a 5-shot victory over young Dallas Mengel from Watrous, Saskatchewan.

In the Boys 13-14 Division, Mitchell Fox of Okotoks shot a second round of 76 to win by a couple of strokes over long-hitting Brian Wolsey of Lethbridge. Wolsey continued his good form with a pair of 79's.

Michael Knight from Calgary romped to victory with two 75's in the Boys 15-16 Division, where he held off local favourite Jeremy Fischer (Medicine Hat) and Taylor Davies from Lethbridge to win by nine strokes.

The Boys 17-18 Division was once again dominated by Kyle Andreas from Swift Current, Saskatchewan, who won for the third time in succession on the Western Canada Junior Golf Tour with rounds of 79, 78. Curtis Hirsch of Vegreville shot a 76 on day two to come from well down the pack and finish second, four shots behind Andreas.

The Intermediate Division winning scores were the highlight in the tournament, with former Canadian Junior Champion Mike Mezei shooting 72, 71 for a 143 total. Runner-up was Kyle Smart of Calgary.

All Division champions received exemptions into the WCJGT Invitational at the PGA Tour's Air Canada Championship in Vancouver, BC, August 31-September 1, 2002.

Individual winners in the Sundog Eyewear Skills Competition were Jace Barros (Edmonton), Dannielle Renner (Lethbridge), Mitchell Fox (Okotoks), Ryan Stevenson (Lethbridge) and Jordan Wagner (Swift Current).

The next WCJGT event is at Lacombe Golf Club in Lacombe, Alberta, July 25 & 26, 2002. For more information or to register please call 1-877-859-GOLF.
