Canada’s number one-played Junior Golf Tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), recently sent teams representing British Columbia and Alberta to the 50th anniversary of the Junior America’s Cup championship at the prestigious Club at Ruby Hill in Pleasanton, CA, USA, July 31 through August 4, 2022.

Like a collegiate event, the Junior America’s Cup features 18 teams of four boys representing their state, province or country in a 54-hole competition that takes place over three days. Junior America’s Cup Alumni include Tony Finau, who just won two PGA Tour events, as well as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, Corey Pavin, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Cantlay, Rickie Fowler, Ryan Moore, Andrew Putnam and Kyle Stanley.

MJT members representing British Columbia were Eric Joo and Jason Yang (Coquitlam), Shunkichi Yamamoto (Victoria), and Matthew Wilson (Nanaimo), captained by MJT National Operations Director, Trent Matson. Representing Alberta were Aneesh Kaura (Calgary), Kye Fisher (Leduc), Solomon Decksheimer (Calgary) and Connor Czirjak (Rocky View County), captained by MJT volunteer and Edge School’s Golf Director, Ryan Cater.

“This was one of the best junior events in terms of the organization of it all, the overall experience, and the high quality of the players, that I have ever attended,” said Matson. “It was steeped in tradition, respect and history. Our players are very lucky to be given a chance to compete at this level.”

“If you want to play D1 golf, you won’t get a better chance to be seen than at this event,” stated Cater, as over 20 top college coaches were in attendance from the Universities of Oklahoma, San Diego State, San Diego, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State, Washington, Pepperdine, Grand Canyon, USC, Arizona, New Mexico, Gonzaga and more.

Team Utah defeated a hard charging Team Arizona lead by standout Oregon State recruit, Rylan Johnston. Aneesh Kaura, 17, from Calgary, AB, and a future SFU golf team member, was the Low Canadian. Full results are on the JAC website

The Junior Golf Association of Northern California (JGANC), which hosted this 50th anniversary event, also hosted the very first JAC in 1972. As one of the many highlights experienced, the JGANC invited players and captains on the San Francisco Giant’s boat for a cruise around Alcatraz, Angel Island and under the Golden Gate Bridge, before heading into McCovey Cove and being featured live on the San Francisco Giants televised game.

The MJT looks forward to qualifying players for the 2023 JAC, which will be held in Reno, Nevada. For more information on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, please visit www.maplejt.com. For more information on the Junior America’s Cup, please visit www.junioramericascup.com.

About the Junior America’s Cup
The original JAC started as matches between the Mexican, Alberta and the Southern California Junior Golf Associations with each association hosting every three years. In 1972, a meeting was held at the Hogan Cup at Riverside Golf and Country Club in Portland, Ore. The meeting’s participants included Bob Norquist, Oregon; Lou Smith, San Diego; Walt McConalogue, Northern California; Bill Brandt, Southern California; Al Jones, Pacific Northwest GA and Fred Wellsby and Harry White, British Columbia. At the meeting the decision was made to expand the Junior America’s Cup to include the western states plus Canada and Mexico. Those participating were British Columbia, Alberta, Idaho, Mexico (with two teams), Nevada, Northern California, Oregon, San Diego, Southern California, Washington and Utah.  See more here.
