Canada's #1 Junior Golf Tour

The Road to College Golf, run exclusively by PGA Professionals

Wait-listed field on MJT Mini Tour battle weather at Elmwood Golf Club

Swift Current, SK – (June 28, 2020) - With the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour slowly beginning its revamped season across Canada, the MJT Mini Tour made its first Saskatchewan stop on Saturday, June 27, in Swift Current, where junior golfers aged 12 and under dealt with rain and wind during the one-day stop at Elmwood Golf and Country Club. Canada’s number-one played junior golf tour has seen many changes since re-starting its season on the west coast last week, and the Saskatchewan players got to see first-hand the new MJT health and safety protocols.

Five division titles were awarded at the event and capturing first place in the MJT Boys U8 Division by a near three-shot margin was eight-year old Keaton Kreklewich, of Melville, SK. Kreklewich carded an 82 and said, “It was really fun and great that my dad caddied for me.”

Having a great start in the MJT Boys 9-10 Division was nine-year old Austin Nesbitt. The young golfer from Pilot Butte, SK, fired an 82 to win his division by seven shots. “I spent lots of time over the winter and spring training with my coach,” commented Nesbitt. “Winning the first event feels so great!”

Saskatoon, SK’s Ryan Mosher recorded an 87 to take home first place in the MJT Boys 11-12 division by three shots. The 12-year old golfer attributed his win to his state of mind throughout the round commenting, “I didn’t think about the past shots; I stayed in the present thinking about one shot at a time.”

The MJT Girls 11-12 title went to past MJT Mini Tour winner, Poppy Hudye Baranesky. The 11-year old player from Saskatoon captured two MJT Mini Tour titles last year in her first full season and started off her 2020 circuit firing a 100 to win at Elmwood G&CC.

In the MJT Girls 9-10 Division, Yuna Lee, 10, of Regina, SK, recorded a 104 to win in her first ever appearance on the MJT Mini Tour. When asked if she was thinking about any of the other players during her round, Lee responded by saying, “Yes, but I tried really hard to stay focused!” Lee will be looking to build off her first performance at the next MJT Mini Tour event in Saskatchewan.

Full results of the Elmwood stop can be viewed here. The next 12U event, the MJT Mini Tour at Goulet Golf Course in Regina, SK, will take place on July 5. More information can be found online on www.maplejt.com.
