Australian Takes Low Overall at MJT International Players Championship (IPC)

Beaumont, California (March 24, 2015) – Canada’s number-one played Junior Golf Tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) presented by Boston Pizza, held the inaugural MJT International Players Championship (IPC) over the March 21st and 22nd weekend in Beaumont, California, where juniors from Australia, Mexico, the United States, China and Canada competed on the very difficult Oak Valley Golf Club, one of the PGA Tour's second stage qualifying sites.

Friendly matches between teams from Canada, USA, Mexico and Australia preceded the tournament at Carlton Oaks Golf Club in San Diego, CA, where USA was the eventual winner by seven strokes. Players then moved on to Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont to compete over 36 holes of stroke play.

Amy Chu, 14, of Bonnyrigg Heights, Australia was the overall low player in the field and the IPC Girls Champion after shooting back-to-back rounds of 72's to finish at even par 144, outstanding scores on the extremely challenging Oak Valley track. “I credit my shots to the green and being able to stick to my game plan,” said Chu about her keys to victory, rating the course and conditions a solid eight out of ten. “It feels great to win!” Canada’s Tiegan Taylor, 15, of Kelowna, BC, fired 76 on day two to shoot 81-76 (157) and claim second in the Girls division over Ke Yang, 13, of China (76-83=159).

The IPC Boys Champion was 16-year old Canadian Roman Timmerman of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, who shot 71- 75 (146). Timmerman had five birdies on the first day and never looked back. “The course and conditions were perfect,” he stated. “It’s an awesome feeling to see that my game can compete internationally.” Runner-up just one shot back was Canada’s Perry Xin, 15, of Vancouver, BC, who had a tough bogey on the 36th hole to miss a playoff, while 15-year old Joshua Armstrong of Australia finished in third place (73-75=148).

The Team Competition during the Oak Valley tournament was convincingly won by the Australian contingent of Chu, Armstrong, Chloe Thornton and Jordan Garner. In the Skills Competitions, Long Drive prizes went to Kitty Zhang of Vancouver and Robert Wilkinson of Dundas, Ontario, while Closest-to-the-Pin prizes were won by Sandee Park of West Vancouver and Matthew Kreutz of Coldstream, British Columbia. A hole-in-one on the picturesque 11th hole by 16-year old Mackenzie Raines of Kitchener, Ontario, highlighted round one.
