MAPLE LEAF TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR TEAM MATCHES IN MEXICO

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - JUNE 25, 2004
TSAWWASSEN, B.C. ? The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is pleased to announce the Canadian contingent in the 3rd annual International Junior Golf Team Matches at Las Colinas Golf Club in Cuernavaca, Mexico, August 3-6, 2004.
The Maple Leaf Team was selected from top finishers at four qualifying events held across Canada and includes:
Konrad Scheidacker, 18, Surrey, BC
Kenneth Chmela, 14, Penticton, BC
Michael Mottola, 17, Niagara Falls, ON
Steven Her, 15, Edmonton, AB
Brett McNallie, 17, Drayton Valley, AB
Devin Carrey, 17, Langley, BC
Kenny Keeler, 16, Portage La Prairie, MB
The format for the competition is a modified Ryder Cup where the Maple Leaf Team will earn three points for each win and one point for a tie against competing teams from the United States and Mexico. The event, held just outside Mexico City, will be officiated by USGA Rules Official Chip Puhl and covered by Fox Sports (Latin).
The Maple Leaf Team of seven players from across Canada will be chaperoned by Alec Macdonald, Canadian PGA Professional and Head Golf Coach at the University of British Columbia, who expects this opportunity will provide many benefits to the players.
?The players will have a chance to meet and compete against junior golfers from other countries, and learn a little about the differences in their cultures. Above all, these matches will be played with emphasis on the sportsmanship and decorum that accompanies Match Play golf,? says Macdonald. ?This will be an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives.?
Ray Stewart, Official Joint Spokesperson for the Maple Leaf Junior Tour together with fellow PGA Tour veteran Dave Barr, agrees with Macdonald.
?The players are to be congratulated on earning their spot on the Maple Leaf Team,? said Stewart. ?This will be a great experience on an international stage and they should be proud of being the Canadian contingent.?
In addition to the Team Matches in Mexico, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour qualifies players for other major international events such as the Callaway Golf Junior World Championships and the East Aurora International Junior Masters.
Team members will also have a number of opportunities to practice their competition skills before their August departure date ? the Tour continues its 30-event 2004 schedule with multi-day tournaments in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. Full schedule and information regarding the Tour can be found at their interactive website at www.maplejt.com.
