Petersburg, ON – (May 7, 2012) – The Ontario season on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) got off to a great start in good weather at Rebel Creek Golf Club in Petersburg on May 5 and 6, where 85 junior golfers competed in four divisions over the two days, with exemptions into the Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) National Championship in Florida, USA, also up for grabs.

Annika Haynes, 15, of Oakville, ON, was the winner of a paid entry into the FCWT event after posting low overall and winning the Girls division title in style with scores of 72-74 (146). “Key to my victory was my consistency with my irons and my putts, she summed up, adding, “It feels really good (to win) and a great way to start the season.” Runner-up in the Girls group was Maddy Piccininni, 17, of Toronto, ON, who shot 74-81 (155) while the bronze medallist was Meghan McDougall, 17, of Markham, ON (79- 81=160).

Charles Corner, 15, of Cayuga, ON, fired 73- 74 (147) to secure the second spot into the FCWT event and win the Boys 14-16 division title by three strokes over Tyler Douse, 15, of Waterloo (75-75=150). “It feels good – it was a great weekend for golf and the course was in good shape. The tournament was really well run and had a challenging set up especially the Sunday pin placements,” said Corner. He added that he was thankful for the win and hopes to have a good season this year. Third place went to David Fell, 16, of Guelph, ON, who carded 77-76 (153).

The Boys 17-19 gold medallist was Kody Fry, 17, of Grand Valley, ON, who shot 73-76 (149), claiming patience was the key to his win and that his goals are “just try to play well and get ready for university.” Tied for second in the division at 158 total score were Michael Petitti, 17, of Mississauga, ON (76, 82) and Colton Clemmer, 18, of Kitchener, ON (78- 80).

Parker Lobban, 13, of St. Clements, ON, won the MJT Boys 13 and Under title with rounds of 78-79 (157), citing that it was “definitely strategy and hitting consistent shots” as the reasons for his win. “My goals this season are to play my best golf and have a lot of fun,” he added. Anthony Occhiuto, 12, of Guelph, ON, placed second three shots back at 81-79 (160), while there was a tie for third place at 162 total score between Michael Rizzo, 13, of Brandtford, ON (82, 80) and Nicholas Kyriakou, 13, of Waterloo, ON (81, 81).
According to Tournament Director and PGA of Canada Professional, Dave Smallwood, the tournament highlight was seeing 9-year-old and first-time tournament player Connor Munro of Etobicoke, ON, hold on and keep it together due to being encouraged by his playing partners, and end up shaving 28 strokes off his day one score to win the Golf Town Comeback Award for Boys 13 and under.

The other Golf Town Comeback divisional winners were Braun Avarell of Brantford, ON, Riley Spear of Acton, ON,, and Alexandra Garcia of Kitchener. Mr. Lube Long Drive Awards in each division went to Brendan Green of Cambridge, ON, Andrew Chambers of London, ON, Mackenzie Raines of Kitchener, and Michelle Ruiz of Mississauga.
