Western Canada Junior Tour Stops in Swift Current

Elmwood Golf and Country Club in Swift Current hosted the 2002 season-opener in Saskatchewan of the Boston Pizza-presented Western Canada Junior Golf Tour this past weekend.

The strong gusting winds, especially on day one, made low scoring difficult in the Birdie Golf Academy Junior at Elmwood. Despite the elements, Bari-Lynn Erais from Lethbridge, Alberta, posted an exceptional first round score of 75 which paved the way for an overall 6 shot win in the Girls Division.

Brian Wolsey of Lethbridge edged out Cody Mitchell of Lafleche by 5 shots to win the Boys 13-14 Division. Lethbridge juniors also dominated in the Boys 15-16 Division, where Mark Robinson won by retrogression to capture his first WCJGT event, tying Dale Vallely with scores of 78,73 (151).

In the Boys 12 & Under Division Taylor Smith of Swift Current enjoyed his home course advantage on Elmwood and won both the Sundog Eyewear Skills Competition and the overall Division title with solid scores of 84, 82 (166). Runner-up Glen Lengyel of Lethbridge continued his fine play on the Tour to date with a solid second place finish.

Swift Current juniors also featured in the Boys 17-18 Division where local favorite Kyle Andreas won by 3 shots over Calgarian Mike Marr. Andreas, who also won his Division's Skills Competition, will be looking to repeat at the next WCJGT event - the upcoming Western Canada CPGA-Saskatchewan Junior Championship in Regina on June 8th and 9th.

Other Sundog Eyewear Skills Competition winners included Keegan Andreas (Swift Current), Eric Taillon (Calgary) and Christa Spahmann (Coaldale, AB).

Division winners Bari-Lynn Erais, Taylor Smith and Kyle Andreas all receive WCJGT exemptions into the nationally-ranked Future Links Western Championship in Bragg Creek, Alberta, July 2-5, 2002.
