Qualifies Top Players For International Junior Masters |

LETHBRIDGE, AB: The Boston
Pizza-presented Western Canada Junior Golf Tour held the second tournament
of the Albertan season in near perfect conditions at Paradise Canyon Golf
Resort in Lethbridge, Alberta, this past Saturday and Sunday. Titled the
Perma Insurance Junior, the event was a qualifier for the 50th
International Junior Masters which is to be held June 24-28 in East
Aurora, New York.
Birdies were flying high and the low score of the first day (65) allowed
Dane Thorogood (Cochrane) to hold off a hard charging Dale Vallely (Lethbridge)
for first place in the Boys 15-16 Division. Thorogood added a 75 to his
first round 65 to edge Vallely by three shots.
Both Thorogood and Vallely earned the WCJGT spots to the International
Junior Masters Tournament, which is one of America's oldest and most
prestigious junior events. First played in 1953, the tournament is part of
the Polo Junior All-American Points Series and past contestants and
winners of the event include PGA Tour regulars Billy Mayfair, Billy
Andrade, Dudley Hart, Jeff Sluman, Joey Sindelar, and Rory Sabbatini.
Other top finishers at Paradise Canyon were Rhys Royer of Calgary, who won
the Boys 12 & Under Division for the second time in a row with scores of
72-72, and Dustin Zhang, also of Calgary, who won the Boys 13-14 Division
by 4 shots with rounds of 69-75. Brian Wolsey (Lethbridge) was second with
a pair of 74’s.
In the Girls 12 & Under Division, 9-year-old Nicole Zhang from Calgary
shot two excellent rounds of 93 and 90 to win handsomely, and overall
Girls Division Champion was 18-year-old Dannielle Renner of Coaldale, who
shot back-to-back 75’s to win by 4 strokes over Kari Broshko of Calgary.
In the Boys 17-18 Division, Chris Long of Edmonton held off Mike Qualle of
Calgary. Both recorded a total score of 145 for the two days but Long took
the title with the best second day score.
