Junior Golf Tour Heats Up at Squamish Valley ACC Qualifier

The Boston Pizza-sponsored Western Canada Junior Golf Tour held the TriStar Industries Junior at the beautiful Squamish Valley Golf Club this past Monday and Tuesday, July 22-23.  The 35 degree temperatures and strong winds (Squamish is a native word meaning "mother wind") made the 6464 yard par 72 layout play its toughest.  The conditions left the greens nearly impossible to hold, forcing players to adapt to links golf bump-and-run shots.

The competitors came from as far afield as Phuket, Thailand and Calgary, Alberta, to compete for exemptions into the season-ending WCJGT Invitational at the PGA Tour's Air Canada Championship, August 31-September 1 at Northview Golf & CC in Surrey, B.C.

The Boys 12 and Under Division was won by Matthew Steger of North Vancouver, who scored (86,82)168 to win by eight shots over runner-up Blair Coan of Abbotsford. North Vancouver's Thomas Petts scored rounds of (81,76)157 to win the Boys 13-14 Division by five strokes over runner-up Mitchell Lock of Mission.  The Girls Division was won by Richmond's In-ah Park who played two fine rounds scoring (74,76)150. Ashley Hogg of Garibaldi Heights placed second over Anna Kim of Vancouver in a countback.

Squamish locals dominated the Boys 17-18 Division, where Scott Sellers shot (76,73)149 to win and Hughie Gawley placed second with scores of (78,82)160. Trevor O'Reilly from Whistler placed third.

In the Boys 15-16 Division, Coquitlam's Blake Rowe-Sleeman scored (74,78)152 to win by five strokes over runner-up Corey Steger of North Vancouver, and the Intermediate Division was won by Kevin Miller of Surrey with a 154 total.

Sundog Eyewear Skills Competition winners were Matthew Steger (North Vancouver), Jessie Singh (Guildford), Blake Rowe-Sleeman (Coquitlam), Gordie Swenson (Richmond), Dominique Pytlewski (North Vancouver) and Adam Tulk (Vancouver).

The next stop on the WCJGT schedule is the Honda Way Junior at Ledgeview Golf Club in Abbotsford, July 29-30. For more information please log on to www.wcjgt.com or call 604-943-1645.
