Season-Opening Junior Golf Tournament Goes to Playoff

The Boston Pizza-presented Western Canada Junior Golf Tour held it’s first event of the season this weekend in Maple Ridge, B.C. - the Mr. Lube Junior at Meadow Gardens Golf Club. Over 100 players came from as far a field as Edmonton, Calgary and Washington State to compete in six age divisions.

Eugene Wong (North Vancouver) and Jonnie Motomochi (North Delta) could not have been more closely matched. The pair are both 11 years old and both shot 78 on Saturday, beginning Sunday’s round three shots behind Vancouver’s Richard Lee who had opened with a 75. Wong and Motomochi both fired spectacular even par 72’s on Sunday to pass Lee and force a playoff to decide who would represent the WCJGT at the Future Links Prairie Championship next month in Manitoba. On the first hole of the sudden death playoff, the par four 10th, both boys made birdie threes. The contest ended when Motomochi failed to make his par-saving putt on the second playoff hole (the par four 15th ) after missing the green. Wong two-putted for the win and the Boys 12 & Under Title.

After a first round 72 in foul weather conditions, Tsawwassen’s Jordan Mason held the overnight lead in the Boys 15 & 16 Division. Sunday’s brilliant sunshine gave way to easier scoring when Abbotsford’s Steven Dales fired a final round 72 to go with his first round 74 to beat Mason by one stroke. Dales won a Callaway Steelhead III and an Exemption into the Future Links Prairie Championship.

Other fine performances included West Vancouver’s Matt Weaver who won the Boy’s 13-14 Division scoring 76,77 for a 153 total over Sardis resident Justin Min while Gordie Swensen of Richmond won the Boys 17-18 Division scoring 78, 72 for a 150 total. Vancouver’s Eom Ji Park 79,73 edged out Maple Ridge’s Helen Jung 77,76 by one shot to win the overall Girls Division title and Carla Ty of Richmond won the Girls 14 & Under title.

The Sundog Eyewear Long Drive Contest winners were Peter Radonjic (New West.), Andrew Chapman (White Rock), Matt Nielsen (Coquitlam), Chelsea Clark (Abbotsford), Rafael Lee (Burnaby) and Riley Wheeldon (Comox).
