MJT Team Canada edged by one point to land silver in Mexico

CUERNAVACA, MEX: The 7th annual International Junior Golf Team Invitational (IJGI) concluded with a second place finish for the Canadian contingent last week at Club de Golf Santa Fe in Cuernavaca, Mexico, August 6-8, 2008. Teams representing the countries of USA, Canada and Mexico played best ball matches in the first round, alternate shot on the second, and singles matches in the third and final round, accumulating points for each country which totaled 35, 34 and 25 respectively.

The eight junior golfers on MJT Team Canada beat the Mexican hosts but lost to Team USA by only one point in the unique match play format. The Canadian contingent was selected from qualifiers held across the country earlier this season by the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada's only national junior tour run by Golf Professionals.

Sponsored by Travel Underwriters, Official International Events Partner of the MJT, the team included Scotty Cameron, 18, of Langley, BC, Porsche Campbell, 15, of Vancouver, BC, Chris Hall, 18, of Mississauga, Ontario, Brock Helgeson, 17, of Balmertown, Ontario, Travis Jenkins, 16, of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Sean Ko, 16, of West Vancouver, BC, Valentina Trillo, 13, of Port Moody, BC, and Ryan Werre, 16, of Redcliff, Alberta.

Opening ceremonies were attended by regional officials and dignitaries from the State of Morelos, and featured the raising of each country's flag. David Campbell, MJT Team Captain, said, "This was a wonderful opportunity for the young golfers; the kids did a great job. Team Canada was just shy of first place; it came down to the last point - on the 17th hole was the tie-breaker - nobody walked away with the match. Overall we were all winners."
